Canberra, Australia’s national capital, is also Australia’s defence capital with the largest concentration of defence and national security agencies, assets and organisations in Australia. The ACT government is committed to the growth of the defence industry in the Canberra region and to maximising the economic benefit to this region from the Commonwealth Government’s defence commitments.

The ACT Government values the significant contribution the defence industry already makes to the Canberra region. The Department of Defence, headquartered in Canberra, directly contributes approximately $3.1 billion per annum to our local economy and creates 16,800 jobs. Canberra and the surrounding region is also headquarters to a number of national security, cyber, diplomatic, intelligence and law enforcement agencies.

The Canberra region also hosts the Royal Military College at Duntroon, the Australian Defence Force Academy, the Australian Command and Staff College, and Headquarters Joint Operations Command.
