The Business and Industry Development web portal complies with the requirements for Commonwealth and ACT Government web portals namely the Privacy Act 1988 and the Privacy Commissioner's Guidelines for Federal and ACT Government World Wide Web portals.

Information Collected

When you visit the Business and industry Development web portal to browse or download information, we automatically collect and store the following information about your visit:

  1. The Internet Protocol address and a component of the domain name used (eg: .com, .net, .gov, .au etc.). The Internet Protocol address is a numerical identifier assigned either by your Internet service provider or directly to your computer. We use the Internet Protocol address to direct Internet traffic to you where this is required;
  2. The type of browser and operating system you used;
  3. The date and time you visited this portal;
  4. The web pages or services you accessed at this portal;
  5. The time spent on individual pages and the portal overall; and
  6. Which files are downloaded.

The web portal also collects contact information (eg. postal and email address). However, we do not use these details unless you choose to provide this information. The reason for collecting this information will be displayed on the appropriate page or within the help screen associated with the page. In that event your details will only be used for the purpose for which you provided them and will not be added to any mailing list unless you ask for this to be done. We will not use your details for any other purpose, and will not disclose them to other persons or organisations without your consent.

"Personal information" means information or an opinion (including information or an opinion forming part of a database), whether true or not, and whether recorded in a material form or not, about an individual whose identity is apparent, or can reasonably be ascertained, from the information or opinion.

We collect no personal information about you unless you voluntarily participate in an activity that asks for information (eg sending an e-mail, participating in a survey or enrolling in a seminar). If you choose not to participate in these activities, your choice will in no way affect your ability to use any other feature of the Business and Industry Development web portal. In some instances this information is required under law, further information is available on the forms or pages where this is applicable.

The Internet is an insecure medium and users should be aware that there are inherent risks transmitting information across the Internet. Information submitted unencrypted via e-mail or web forms may be at risk of being intercepted, read or modified. If you do not wish to e-mail or send an online form to Business and Industry Development you can send a postal mail to the address at the end of the page.

Purpose for Collecting this Information and Use of Information

The information we automatically collect or store is used to improve the content of our web services and to help us to understand how people are using our services. Information you provide in relation to surveys, feedback or seminars is strictly used for the purpose you provided it.

Business and Industry Development analyses the web portal logs to continually improve the value of the services available on our site. Our website logs are not personally identifiable, and we make no attempt to link them with the individuals that browse the Business and Industry Development web portal.

Other information you provide voluntarily is used for delivering the documents or services you requested and in case we need extra information for clarification. Survey information is used for the purpose designated. Where information is provided to another agency, a statement in accordance with the Information Privacy Principles 1 to 3 in the Privacy Act 1988 as to whom the information is supplied and for what purpose will be clearly identified.

If you complete financial transactions through the Business and Industry Development web portal you are passed through to Canberra Connect's web portal before the payment is made. The financial information you have entered is not used by Canberra Connect for any payments other than those specified by you on this web portal. Credit card details are used by the banking system and not stored by or passed to the ACT Government in any form. Canberra Connect may use your e-mail or other details to respond appropriately. This may be to advise receipt, to address issues you identify, to further improve its web site, or to forward the details to another agency for appropriate action. Public Disclosure

In the ACT, the Privacy Act 1988 ensures that government is open and that the public has a right to access their personal information maintained by the ACT Government. The extent of personal information maintained by the Business and Industry Development web portal and any disclosures that occur are identified in the Privacy Digest issued annually by the Privacy Commissioner.

Access and correction of Personal Information

You can review any personal information we collect about you. You may recommend changes to your personal information you believe in error by submitting a written request that credibly shows the error. In all cases, we will take reasonable steps to verify your identity before granting access or making corrections. Cookies

A cookie is piece of information that is sent to a browser to allow the browser to remember information. This means that if you visit a site and make a decision and a cookie is set, then next time the site is visited, it will remember what decision you made previously.

Our portal uses cookies for two purposes:

  1. To better serve our users we use cookies to customise your browsing experience with Business and Industry Development. Cookies are simple text files stored on your computer by your web browser. They provide a method of distinguishing among visitors to the Business and Industry Development web portal.
  2. This type of customising cookie created on your computer does not contain personally identifying information and does not compromise your privacy or security. We use the cookie feature only to store a randomly generated identifying tag on your computer. You can refuse the cookie or delete the cookie file from your computer by using any of the widely available methods.
  3. To store profile details for form pre-filling for online transactions. These cookies are also stored on your computer so that you can use your profile to fill in other online forms on the Business and Industry Development web portal that have this pre-filling facility available. Business and Industry Development does not have access to the information contained in the cookie on your site and only uses the information that you provide in the forms for the purpose for which it was intended when submitted.

Business and industry Development has taken several steps to safeguard the integrity of its telecommunications and computing infrastructure, including but not limited to authentication, monitoring and auditing. Security measures have been integrated into the design, implementation and day-to-day practices of the entire Business and Industry Development web portal operating environment as part of its continuing commitment to risk management.

We have security measures in place to protect the information you send us against loss, misuse and alteration. The Business and Industry Development web portal is hosted in a DSD accredited secure environment.

Business Licence Information Service (BLIS) sessions are established using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to provide authentication of the system you are dealing with and encryption of all traffic to and from the system.
