As part of the ACT Government's skills strategy, the Skilled and Business Migration (SBM) Unit and the Live in Canberra team actively promote Canberra as a destination of choice for skilled migrants and business investment opportunities. Two officers from SBM and Live in Canberra are currently overseas with a full schedule of migration seminars and meetings with migration agents in New Zealand, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Ireland and South Africa.
The ACT's interests were well represented at a national migration forum hosted by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) in December last year. The forum was part of a consultation process with state and territory stakeholders to help determine the targets for the Australian Government's 2011-12 Migration Program.
The forum also sought input on the proposed changes to the international student program, including the introduction of a points test from July 2011. National peak bodies represented at the forum included: Australian Information Industry Association; Universities Australia; Master Builders Association; Housing Industry Association; and the Chamber of Commerce. These delegates were joined by representatives from State and Territory Governments, including Canberra Institute of Technology and the Chief Minister's Department.
