An Inspiring Australia Project Officer for the ACT was appointed late last year to work collaboratively with the ACT Government, the Federal Government and local organisations to support the Inspiring Australia initiative in the ACT. This includes supporting the ACT focused strategies, the maintenance of a central science communication network for the ACT, supporting the development of Inspiring Australia events and ongoing support of National Science Week.
The ACT Officer has focused on gaining a broad understanding of existing science based activities and of the people and organisations that are currently active in science related activity in the ACT. This has enabled early work at harnessing and maintaining Canberra region networks, as well as the establishment of a monthly newsletter focusing on upcoming science events in the region.
A major area of the ACT Project Officer is responsible for is the organisation of a range of science activities. One of the key events for the ACT, the first Inspiring Australia ACT Annual Dinner will feature Dr Fiona Wood (see Dr Fiona Wood at the first Inspiring Australia ACT Annual Dinner).

BID representatives continue to be active with the Inspiring Australia Officer Working Group. The group enables collaboration and information sharing between Australian, state and territory governments on science communication issues. Its major objective is to develop and implement a national science communication strategy in pursuit of a scientifically engaged Australia. When it met in December, the group was updated on state/territory and national developments, and is currently finalising its work program for 2011.
