Canberra-based independent supermarket Supabarn opened its new warehouse at Majura Park on 21 May, bringing greater choice and potentially lower prices to Canberra consumers.
The opening follows the recent release of the ACT Government’s new supermarket policy, which aims to create more retail and wholesale competition in the local supermarket industry.
Opening the Supabarn warehouse, Chief Minister Jon Stanhope said it was a great example of how the Government’s supermarket competition policy is giving independent operators like Supabarn the confidence they need to grow and boost their presence in the market place.
Supabarn Supermarkets employs more than 750 people, making it one of Canberra’s largest private employers. The company is expanding its presence across Canberra and into Sydney’s inner west and Sutherland Shire districts.
The Government has also announced its intent to release land in Kingston for a new Supabarn supermarket and in Casey for a new ALDI and Supabarn. Woolworths and Coles will also be excluded from bidding for a full-line supermarket site in Amaroo; however, Coles will be able to bid for a full-line site in Dickson.
