The Canberra node of the Australian Plant Phenomics Facility continues to enhance its reputation as an international leader in plant research.
Opened in July 2008 with ACT Government support, the Facility provides researchers with access to the next generation of robotic and imaging plant research tools, important in tackling global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity conservation and future food production.
Since hosting the first international symposium on plant phenomics in April last year, the Facility has begun attracting leading researchers to Canberra as ‘Innovators in Residence’.
ACT Government support underpins the ability of these and other researchers – recently including a PhD student and two Honours students from Newcastle – to use the facility.
Evidence of international recognition is mounting. The Facility secured $1.2 million funding from the US Department of Agriculture to undertake research on wheat genetics, and is a key collaborating partner in an international rice research consortium funded by the Gates Foundation.
