Chief Minister, Jon Stanhope MLA, has announced that the ACT Government is considering the introduction of electric vehicles (EVs) to the Government fleet. It is hoped that a percentage of the ACT Government fleet will be replaced with electric cars in the near future, not only reducing the impacts of government business on the environment, but fostering wider adoption of EVs in the Territory.
The ACT Government believes that this ground-breaking step will encourage car manufacturers and EV infrastructure companies to invest in the ACT market, sending a signal that there is a vibrant market in the Territory for new, zero emission vehicle technology. Mr Stanhope’s announcement was inspired by his meeting with representatives of London City Council during the recent Trade Mission to the UK and UAE. London City Council has made a firm commitment to the uptake of EVs and the installation of public charge points.
This announcement builds on the June 2009 agreement for the ACT to be the site of Australia’s first city wide roll-out of Better Place’s model of EV charge spots and switch stations.
